The US congressmen called for President of Azerbaijan to release Aliev brothers, political prisoners

Two co-chairmen of Legal Committee of the Congress of the USA Frank Wolf and James McGovern sent a message to President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev calling to release political prisoners.

The authors of the message expressed their concern about the fact that the problem of political prisoners is unsettled. In particular, the congressmen express their "deep concern" about keeping brothers Farhad and Rafik Aliev in prison for a long term and ask to release them.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that ex-Minister of Economic Development Farhad Aliev and his brother Rafik Aliev were arrested for accusation of at attempt of coup d'etat in 2005 but later convicted for economic crimes.

"We appreciate Azerbaijan's efforts aimed at maintenance of economic and social stability. However, we are concerned about Azerbaijan's failure to secure protection of human rights, first of all, those of political prisoners", IA "Turan" quotes the congressmen's message.

The congressmen ask the Government of Azerbaijan to carry out its international obligations in the context of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, "Contact online news" reports.
