Azerbaijani MFA: Mexican Senate treats events in Khodjaly as genocide

The upper house of the Parliament of Mexico recognized the tragic events that took place on February 25-26, 1992, in Khodjaly town of Nagorno-Karabakh as genocide. This was reported by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Let us remind you that at night on February 26, 1992, Azerbaijani-populated town of Khоdjaly in Nagorno-Karabakh was seized by Armenian armed formations with the participation of the motorized rifle regiment No. 366 of the former Soviet Army. The military operation was accompanied by massacre of civilians.

According to the Azerbaijani MFA, the decision of the Senate of Mexico emphasizes that on February 26, 1992, the troops of the Armenian armed forces attacked the civilian population of Khodjaly in Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and "as a result of their acts that international organizations unequivocally treat as genocide, hundreds of people were killed under ethnic grounds."

"This is a very positive precedent and a strong start in the recognition by the international community of the tragedy of Azerbaijanis in Khodjaly as an act of genocide," stated Elman Abdullaev, Spokesman of the Azerbaijani MFA.

Let us note that earlier, among the foreign parliaments, only Turkish Grand National Assembly adopted statements condemning "the Khodjaly genocide".
