Dagestani resident surrenders to militants' adaptation commission

Three days after the meeting of the Dagestani commission for adaptation of militants, who decided to surrender, to civilian life, a 23-year-old Gasan Kurabekov, one more member of the armed underground, voluntarily surrendered himself to Rizvan Kurbanov, Chairman of the Adaptation Commission, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic's Government.

Sevil Novruzova, the head of the Derbent city commission for adaptation, handed over to the commission the statement of Gasan Kurabekov, in which he claimed his repentance and his desire to appear before the investigatory authorities in the hope of their leniency for his voluntary exit from the "forest," the "Kommersant" reports.

According to Gasan Kurabekov, his leaving for the forest was preceded by reading of extremist websites and conversations with recruiters of "forest people" at the local tea house, and he left for the forest not for money, but "for the sake of Allah." Nevertheless, according to the former militant, on his very first day in the forest in one of the militants' group, he decided to return home; however, he was prevented to do that by the circumstances.

According to Gasan Kurabekov, Abu-Yasir, one of the group leaders, soon gave him 30,000 roubles and explained that he was to spend the money for "food and medical treatment" in case, if Gasan would have to hide himself along after any unsuccessful raid.

According to the former militant, he participated in shelling of the OVD (Interior Division) in the city of Dagestanskie Ogni on September 22, and some time later policemen stopped him in Derbent.

The policemen asked young people to present their documents. "I had a submachine gun under my jacket," says Gasan Kurabekov. "And I asked the policeman to let me go, since I did not want to shoot. In response, the police officer pointed his pistol at me, and then I fired into the air."

In October, Gasan Kurabekov with a 23-year-old Telman Gadjimustafaev and a 41-year-old Nariman Mirzamagomedov, the group "sharif", came to a rented apartment in Makhachkala. In the evening of October 13, power agents started to prepare a special operation to neutralize the three militants.

Gasan Kurabekov came out to the yard, noticed armoured transport vehicles and managed to escape before power agents organized a cordon, and Gadjimustafaev and Mirzamagomedov, who stayed at the house, later surrendered under guarantees of the commission for adaptation. Soon, Gasan Kurabekov wrote a note to his parents, informing them that he wanted to return, and after a day or two he returned home.

After a conversation with the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Dagestani Government, Gasan Kurabekov was interrogated by investigator, the RIA "Dagestan" reports.
