Rostov Region resident sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment for grenade explosion on beach

The Rostov Regional Court has sentenced Leon Krivobokov, a resident of the city of Volgodonsk, to 8.5 years of imprisonment in high security colony on case of grenade explosion on beach in summer of 2010.

On July 26, 2010, the Volgodonsk UVD (Interior Department) received information that a hand grenade had been exploded in a beer tent on the beach. As a result of the incident, seven people were injured. Two of them were hospitalized with shell fragment wounds of their limbs. Five people received medical care at place. On July 12, 2011, investigation into the case has been completed and brought to the court.

"Leon Krivobokov was convicted under Articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation 'attempted murder' and 'illegal purchase, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of weapons'," the "Interfax" quotes Dina Schekotina, the representative of the court, as saying.

The case against Krivobokov was considered by the jury who found that he deserved leniency in part of the charges. Besides, at sentencing, the court took into account the positive characteristics of the defendant and his state rewards.

The court also partially granted a civil lawsuit filed by one of the victims and collected from Krivobokov 20,000 roubles for moral damage. The verdict has not come into force, and it may be challenged at the Judicial Division for Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

Comments of Krivobokov himself and his defence's representatives on the court verdict are still not available.
