The presence of ICRC in South Ossetia extended until 2012

The government of South Ossetia has decided to extend to 2012 the stay of the representative office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the country. The appropriate statement was adopted at the government's sitting on September 30.

According to the statement, the term of stay of the office in South Ossetia was extended until October 1, 2012.

"Through the ICRC, we implement many projects. Besides, the organization performs certain tasks that we cannot execute, in view of political relations with some neighbouring states. It is the only link between the citizens imprisoned in Georgia and those who are here,"- said Murat Djioev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia.

He has stressed that "the Red Cross is the only international mediator between the two countries," the "Res" reports.

The ICRC is also implementing projects aimed at better water supply in the territory of South Ossetia. Thus, the ICRC was engaged in repairing the irrigation canal in the village of Tsyorbisa in the Znaur District, which was damaged by a landslide.

On September 27, the mission of the ICRC announced the completion of the project, the "Osinform" reports.
