Journalist Lander in Sochi recommences publishing “Mestnaya” newspaper

In August publishing of the newspaper “Mestnaya” (“Local”) with a video application will be recommenced in the health resort of Sochi. It was held up about a year and a half ago after an attempt at its Editor-in-Chief Arkady Lander.

Earlier, the “Caucasian Knot” reported that on April, 26, 2010, the journalist was severely beaten up. Lander and his colleagues attribute this attempt to the journalist’s professional activities. After the incident publishing was held up and Lander was undergoing treatment for a long time. The paymasters and executors of the attempt have not been found.

It was decided to recommence publishing the paper this August. Editor-in-Chief of “Mestanya” Arkady Lander told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent that “none of the journalists from Sochi or the region, none of the governmental mass media reported what happened to him which makes one meditate over the policy of Kuban authorities concerning independent journalists and mass media in Sochi”.

Human rights activists of Sochi, in their turn, intend to initiate an appeal to regional Public prosecutor’s office asking to recommence the investigation on the attempt at Arkady Lander.
