HRC "Memorial": investigation into lawyer Sapiyat Magomedova's beating in Dagestan gave no results

A year ago, on June 17, 2010, Sapiyat Magomedova, a lawyer of the Bar "Omarov A. S. and Partners" was beaten by militiamen at the Khasavyurt GOVD (City Interior Division) in Dagestan. As at June 17, 2011, in the case on Magomedova's beating there were no detainees and convicted, a preliminary investigation has not been finished yet.

According to the statement of the HRC "Memorial" delivered to the "Caucasian Knot", the investigation is obviously protracting the case, attempting to blanch out the persons who committed illegal actions against the lawyer.

The HRC "Memorial" calls on the authorities of Dagestan, the investigative and supervisory authorities of the republic to complete the criminal investigation against the militiamen who beat Magomedova.

"If the government and the authorities do not want to lose legitimacy in the society's eyes, the criminals in uniform should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law ... After Magomedova's beating five more lawyers were abused and insulted in Dagestan; and all of them were women. Dagestan earned a fame of the republic where the profession of a lawyer has become truly dangerous," stressed the HRC "Memorial" in its statement.
