Construction of sugar factory in Nogai District of Dagestan cancelled because of locals' protests

Dagestani authorities are looking for new land plots for building a sugar-beet mill, since its construction in the Nogai District became impossible because of frequented protest actions of the population.

As reported today by Ali Nurmagomedov, head of the Agency for Investments and Foreign Economic Relations of Dagestan, "the population of the Nogai District has undertaken repeated tough actions against construction of the factory."

"They stand against using the lands of their free-range animal husbandry for building the factory. Because of their strong protests, the project initiator himself – the Dagestani investor Isak Umalatov – doesn't want to implement the project in this district," said Nurmagomedov.

According to his story, "the Dagestani authorities are looking for alternatives," the RIA "Novosti" reports.

The factory project will be surely implemented, the official has stressed. However, as he said, if the required land plot was not found, the project may be split into several stages to be implemented in different parts of the republic.

In his opinion, the project will create 15,000 new jobs. The sugar-beet mill will make up to 200,000 tons of sugar per year. The project cost is estimated at 700 million US dollars, the "Dagestanskaya Pravda" writes.
