FSIN to choose prisons for extremism convicts in any region of Russia

The State Duma has adopted amendments to the Criminal-Executive Code of the Russian Federation, under which those convicted for involvement in illegal armed formations (IAFs) and extremism may be sent to serve their terms to any region of Russia, regardless of where the crime was committed. Human rights defenders were against the amendments.

The region will be chosen by the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as "FSIN"). "The adoption of this legislation will increase the effectiveness of the measures aimed at combating terrorism and extremism, and to avoid concentration of convicts for the crimes of increased danger for the society in the correction facilities, located in the regions of tension," the accompanying documents state.

Let us note, however, that the "Caucasian Knot" has reported that human rights activists had opposed the practice of moving prisoners, including natives of Northern Caucasus, to remote regions for serving their sentences.

Currently, convicts are serving their sentences in correctional institutions, located in the areas, where crimes were committed, or where trials took place.

"It is planned to spread the novelties on the following offences: participation in IAFs and extremism," reports the "Pravo.ru" with reference to the document.
