Arrest of the oppositionists in Azerbaijan prolonged for two months

On May, 24, Sabail district court of Baku decided to prolong the term of arrest of Arif Gajili, Head of Executive Committee of "Musavat" party, Tural Abbasli, Chairman of the youth branch of "Musavat", and Muhammed Medjidli, member of the Azerbaijani Popular Front Party (APFP).

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that all of them were detained on April, 2, during an unauthorized action of the Public Chamber. The number of people arrested for participation in this meeting as of May, 14, came to 15 persons.

According to attorney Asabali Mustafaev, the court granted the motion of Public prosecutor's office and prolonged the term of arrest of the above mentioned persons for two more months, APA reports.

In the attorney's opinion, prolongation of the term of arrest violates the law as there are no legal reasons for keeping the people in custody. The attorney is going to file an appeal, "Turan" reports.

Besides, on May, 24, Sabail court rejected the solicitation of Ahmed Mamedli, Deputy Chairman of the youth branch of "Musavat" party, and non-party Elnur Israfilov of changing the form of preventive punishment for house-arrest. These two persons were also arrested for participation in the action of the Public Chamber on April, 2.

According to their attorney Yalchin Imanov, the judge rejected the solicitation of Mamedli's release without any explanations. At the same time, the human rights activist said that there was an argument between the judge and the bailiffs during trial on Israilov's case, "SalamNews" reports.
