The prosecution appealed against the verdict to ex-Mayor of Georgievsk fined for bribery

State prosecution disagreed with the judgment of Stavropol territorial court concerning ex-Mayor of Georgievsk Victor Gubanov fined for bribery. The public prosecutor appealed against the judgment insisting on imprisonment for the convict.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that Stavropol territorial court acknowledged ex-Mayor of Georgievsk Victor Gubanov guilty of bribery and sentenced him to a fine of 10 million rubles.

It should be reminded that Gubanov was suspected of receiving a bribe to a sum of 1,8 million rubles from a director of an enterprise owner of a shopping centre located in the centre of Georgievsk for issuing a permission of reconstruction of the building. The episode of handing the money over was recorded on September, 15, last year, near the building of the municipal Administration. The state prosecution demanded to sentence the ex-official to nine years of imprisonment.

For the reason of lenity of the punishment V.Gubanov was sentenced to the prosecuting party filed an appeal against the judgment.

During the trial the public prosecutor insisted on sentencing Gubanov to nine years of imprisonment and a fine of 500 thousand rubles, "Interfax-Yug" reports referring to the Department of Prosecutor General's of the Russian Federation in North-Caucasian Federal Okrug.

Observers do not rule out a political motive in criminal prosecution against Gubanov who was holding the office of the second secretary of the City Committee of KPSS for many years emphasizing that the ex-Mayor did not fit in with the Governor's team and the political background of Georgievsk was rather communist orientated than supporting "United Russia".
