Volgograd Court leaves ex-deputy of regional Duma accused of paedophile in custody

The Tsentralny District Court of Volgograd has extended the detention of Nikolai Volkov, a former deputy of the Regional Duma, accused of a series of sexual crimes against children, the press service of the court said.

Let us remind you that Nikolai Volkov, suspected of raping minors, was detained by the police; however on March 15, 2010, he managed to run away, and was put on the federal search list. A week later, on March 22, the Tsentralny District Court of Volgograd ruled to put Volkov in custody. At night on March 18, 2011, Volkov was detained in the train "Anapa-Moscow" in the Rostov Region.

On May 17, the court satisfied the petition of the preliminary investigation to extend Volkov's custody by two months.

The court found that being at large the defendant can escape the investigation and trial, or exert pressure on the victims and witnesses, the Agency "Interfax-South" reports.

So far, the position of the defendant and his official advocate was not made public.
