Picket in support of homeless animals held in Sochi

Today, residents of the resort city of Sochi, Krasnodar Territory, went out to hold a picket as part of the All-Russian action in support of the law on protection of animals.

The picketers have no doubts that animals are caught and killed in the city: eyewitnesses report that animals are poisoned, shot dead from rifles or transported to the knacker's yard; and every year this work is funded from the budget. The Law of the Krasnodar Territory "On Maintenance and Protection of Domestic Animals" directly assumes catching stray animals as the only means to regulate the population of them.

The picketers in Sochi demanded to stop extermination of animals and provide space for building a shelter.

The "regulation" of the population of animals in Sochi has long turned from a sanitary problem into an ethical one: more and more often children become eyewitnesses of cruel treatment of dogs and cats.

For many years already, Sochi animal welfare advocates have been trying to create a shelter for animals-outcasts; they ask local authorities to provide a piece of land and some money. Over the years, Sochi had several Mayors; however, the problem is still there.
