Russia's Supreme Court upholds sentence to ex-head of Astrakhan UBOP

The Panel on Criminal Cases of the Russian Supreme Court has upheld the sentence of life imprisonment to Rinat Salekhov, former head of the department for combating organized crime (known as "UBOP") at the UVD (Interior Department) for the Astrakhan Region, for organizing a criminal grouping and committing especially grave crimes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 3, 2010, Rinat Salekhov was sentenced to life in prison by the Astrakhan Regional Court.

"The Panel has upheld the verdict of life imprisonment passed by the Astrakhan Regional Court to Salekhov, former head of UBOP at the UVD of the Astrakhan Region, with serving the term in a special penal colony," says the website of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of the Russian Federation.

According to the GPO, "Salekhov and the members of the criminal grouping organized by him were found guilty under 11 articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, including Articles 105 (murder), 303 (falsification of evidences), 286 (excess of powers), 295 (encroachment on life of a person administering justice) and 117 (torture)."
