Attackers on Nazran in 2004 sentenced to long prison terms

Today, the Stavropol Territorial Court passed a sentence to 12 defendants, figurants in the case on the attack on Nazran (Ingushetia) in 2004, one of them was sentenced to life imprisonment, and the rest - to 10-25 years of high security colony.

Let us remind you that ten residents of Ingushetia and two natives of Chechnya were accused of participating in the organized attack of militants on the Ingush MIA agencies in 2004. The state prosecutor asked the court to appoint life imprisonment to three of the defendants, and 17-25 years - to the rest of them.

As a result, all the defendants were found guilty under several articles of the Russian Criminal Code, including the articles of "banditry", "terrorism", "murder", "participation in a criminal association", "attempt on the life of law enforcement officers" and "murder". The ITAR-TASS reports that according to the court the defendants had voluntarily joined and actively participated in the groupings of Shamil Basaev, Aslan Maskhadov, Dokku Umarov and others.

Five defendants were sentenced to 25 years in colony, three - to 20 years, three - to 10-12 years, and one received the life-long term.

Besides, the court recognized the right of the victims to be compensated for their material damage and moral harm, the "Interfax" reports.

As reported earlier by the "Caucasian Knot", detainees' relatives repeatedly complained of cruel treatment of the defendants. Out of the 12 defendants, two have already filed complaints to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR); several other convicts are also going to do it.
