Orthodox believers of North-Caucasian Federal Okrug celebrate Christmas

Preparation for the holiday was darkened by firing upon an Orthodox church in the stanitsa of Orjonikidzevskaya from a grenade launcher. None of the congregation or churchmen was injured.

It was already the third episode of firing at an Orthodox church in this stanitsa. 4,5% on the population of Ingushetia profess Christianity.

Archbishop of Stavropol and Vladikavkaz Pheophan thinks that the criminals were aiming at Pokrov Virgin Mary icon decorating the entrance of the church but missed.

In Kabardino-Balkaria where 27,8% of the population are Christianity the Ministry of Interior Affairs had provided guarding of all the Orthodox churches in good time, Press service of regional Ministry of Interior Affairs reports.

  • Rights defenders give number of kidnapped people in Chechnya

    At least 80 residents of Chechnya have been kidnapped after a car with a DUSTUM license plate was set on fire; volunteers have identified the names of a number of them. In the village of Starye Atagi, Urus-Martan District, about 50 members of the Saif-Islam Elmurzaev family, suspected of setting the above car on fire, have been kidnapped; and about 30 people have been kidnapped in the Shali District, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)* has reported.
