Rostov Region: 35,000 ask Medvedev to raise salaries of university teachers

The trade union of the Southern Federal University (SFU) in Rostov-on-Don has sent an open letter to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev with a complaint about low salaries of teachers and a request to address the problem.

"Low salaries of teachers and researchers make their work socially unattractive, and as a result we see an outflow of young and talented personnel, which endangers the very mission of the university," says the letter, signed by 35,000 union members and students.

Vyacheslav Semiguk, chairman of the trade union organization and a member of the Supervisory Board of the SFU, said that to date the salary of an assistant teacher makes 5000 roubles, associate professor with bonuses for the position and PhD degree - 10,350 roubles, and of professor - 16,650 roubles.

Mr Semiguk noted that this is not the first appeal to the federal authorities: the first one was addressed to the then Prime Minister of Russia Dmitri Medvedev in 2006.
