Chechen MIA: 51 militants liquidated this year

From the start of this year, the law enforcement bodies of the Chechen Republic have liquidated 51 militants; and 128 suspected members of the armed underground and their helpers were detained. These figures were announced on August 3 at the meeting in Grozny of President of Chechnya with the leaders of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the republic. Local observers believe that the figures presented by power agents can be overestimated.

According to the MIA's data, during seven months of 2010, in the course of special operations 45 out of 51 supposed militants were killed in the territory of Chechnya, 6 more - in Ingushetia and Dagestan. Out of 128 detained possible militants and their helpers, 28 persons were persuaded to plead guilty. Three detainees are suspected of recruiting militants.

"During the seven months, we revealed and liquidated two bases of illegal armed formations (IAFs) with masked units of arms and outfits. The following was withdrawn from illegal circulation: 159 firearms, over 12,000 ammunition units, 134 shells, mines and fougasses, 281 grenades, 28 self-made explosive devices, and over 137 kilos of explosives," said Ruslan Alkhanov, Interior Minister of Chechnya.
