On 3 June Dagestan Supreme Court finds final verdict for defendant accused of oppositionist Babaev's murder

Today, the Supreme Court of Dagestan held its last session on the murder case of Farid Babaev, a public figure, a human rights activist and the leader of the regional branch of the "Yabloko" party. The prosecution asked for the convicted murder 16 years of colony with a strict regime. The judge will find the final verdict for Rasil Mamedrizaev on Thursday, June 3.

Let us note that on 21 May, the jurymen found Rasil Mamedrizaev guilty and at the same time asked for leniency to him. Seferali Sefimirzoev, accused of complicity, was acquitted by the jury award.

Today, State Prosecutor Husein Alilov asked to convict Mamedrizaev under the sub-section H and I of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code (murder committed by a group of persons by previous concert or by an organized group from mercenary motives, or by contract), and Article 222 of the Criminal Code (Illegal purchase, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or bearing of firearms), and to sentence him to 16 years in a penal colony with a strict regime.

The defense asked the judge to take into account the jury's verdict which contains a plea for leniency to the defendant. Rasil Mamedrizaev was given the last statement but refused from it, saying that he "had nothing to say". The judge will make a final ruling on Thursday, June 3.
