Azerbaijan and Russia agree on border demarcation and Caspian Sea water division

Azerbaijan and Russia have agreed on state border demarcation and water division on the border Samur River; thus, the work on demarcation of the Russian-Azerbaijani frontier at the level of the intergovernmental commission is actually over. This was stated by Khalaf Khalafov, deputy minister of foreign affairs and Azerbaijani co-chairman of the above commission.

The agreements were reached on April 15-16 at the sitting of the intergovernmental commission held in the city of Khachmaz in the north of Azerbaijan.

In particular, it is planned to share the water resources of the Samur River by the "50 to 50" principle. A joint commission will be set up to jointly manage the water resources.

A source in the Russian embassy has confirmed the achievement of the above agreements. According to his story, a couple of months will be needed to prepare agreements for signing.

The negotiations on border demarcation started in 1996; the Russian-Azerbaijani border is 390 km long.
