No actions in Anna Politkovskaya's memory held in Chechnya

The recent anniversary of the death of Anna Politkovskaya, who had in due time written a lot about violations of human rights in Chechnya, remained unmarked by local NGOs. The authorities of the republic organized grandiose horse races on that very day, on October 7, in the honour of the 57th birthday of the chairman of Russian government Vladimir Putin.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by the leader of one of local human rights organizations that "there was no organizer" among the Chechen public and human rights activists to initiate any actions in memory of Politkovskaya.

"The fact that neither Chechnya nor Ingushetia held any actions in memory of Anna Politkovskaya, I personally consider to be our shame. In those days only Anna dared writing the truth about that violence and terror committed by militaries and power agents here. She paid with her life for that," he said.

In his opinion, Anna Politkovskaya deserves streets or schools in the city of Grozny to be named in her honour.

At the same time, members of some NGOs, with whom the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent managed to discuss the topic, expressed doubt that local authorities would allow to hold such action.
