Thousands Makhachkala residents complain of absence of potable water

With advent of summer, Makhachkala sees a deficit of drinking water. In many multi-storey houses of the capital of Dagestan there is no water for about a week, and people are on the brink of extreme actions.

In particular, tenants of Nos. 17, 19 and 21 in Engelsa Street and No. 12 in Shamilya Avenue told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about their problems.

"More than two weeks ago breaks in water supply began, and we've no water during last three days at all," residents of Engelsa Street complain. "Wherever we apply - no sense. It is impossible to make laundry, cook food; many of us have small children. Every day we pay quite a lot buying potable water at shops."

The OJSC "Makhachkalavodokanal" (water supply and sewage service), where the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent addressed, answered that the problem can be in weak water delivery by water line running from the city of Kizilyurt and promised "to find out the reason."

We remind you that last year a water body was built near Makhachkala, and the city administration then promised that residents would have no problems with water.

According to Eleonora Omarieva, head of the "Rospotrebnadzor" (federal consumer supervisor) department for Dagestan, for the period from 2000 till today, the republic has experienced 14 outbreaks of infectious diseases caused by unsatisfactory water supply; 714 persons were registered as victims.
