Armenian ecologists worry of fish stock drop in Lake Sevan
Akop Sanasaryan, chairman of the Greens, stated on June 8 that among Armenian most topical environmental problems are the continued build-up of the coast of Lake Sevan and catastrophic reduction of fish stocks in the Lake.
According to his story, construction of various objects along the coast of Sevan is in itself an obstacle to lifting up the water level.
Boris Gabrielyan, Director of the Institute of Hydrology and Ichthyology, has noted in his comments on sharp reduction of fishes in Lake Sevan that today the Lake has only 170 tons of gwuniads (lake herrings), while in 1980 it was 30,000 tons of them.
"Today, gwuniad as a commercial species no longer exists. Several years ago the situation could have been repaired within some 3-4 years, but today nobody knows how much time we'll need. The water in the Lake becomes more and more dirty; and fish species are in a most disappointing condition," Mr Gabrielyan has noted.
