ECtHR to consider complaint of Ecological Watch activists

On October 17, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) accepted to consideration the complaint of Suren Gazaryan and Dmitry Shevchenko, the members of the Board of the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus", who had been detained in February near the alleged summer residence of Alexander Tkachov, the governor of the Krasnodar Territory.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 28, the Tuapse magistrate court ruled the verdict of guilty against the members of the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus", who were detained by the seaside of the Black Sea at the Blue Bay near the mansion allegedly owned by the head of the Krasnodar Territory administration.

In September, Alexander Baranov, the defender of the activists of the "Ecological Watch" filed a complaint to the ECtHR against the Tuapse court's decision.

On October 17, he received a notice of acceptance of the complaint.

Now, the ECtHR will decide within six months whether the complaint contains violations of the provisions of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and after that the case "Gazaryan and Shevchenko vs. Russia" could be examined on its merits, the website of the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus" reports.
