Experts express claims to Russia and Gorbachev on "Black January" anniversary
Today, Azerbaijani residents are marking the 27th anniversary of the events of the so-called "Black January". On the mourning day for the victims of the invasion of Soviet troops in Baku on January 20, 1990, tens of thousands people came to the Alley of Martyrs (Shekhids) to pay tribute to the victims. Experts and eyewitnesses of the tragic events told about the situation of those days and accused the then Soviet leadership of the bloodshed.

Residents of Chechen town of Shali decide to evict militants' family members
On January 19, the town of Shali hosted a gathering, which participants held militants' family members responsible for the actions of the militants and decided to evict in future militants' family members from the town. Darya Polyudova files complaint against court's verdict
Kuban activist Darya Polyudova, sentenced on charges of extremism, has filed an appeal against the verdict to the Presidium of the Russian Supreme Court (SC). This was reported by the Darya Polyudova's mother. The woman noted that her daughter intends to declare a hunger strike.

Participants of march in memory of Markelov and Baburova report on deterioration of human rights situation in Russia
During the eight years passed since the murders of advocate Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova, a journalist of the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta", the human rights situation in Russia has deteriorated, and the authorities are engaged in aggressive propaganda of hatred and xenophobia through the media controlled by them. The advocates of Zhalaudi Geriev, a "Caucasian Knot" journalist, sentenced in Chechnya to three years in prison, have drafted a cassation complaint against the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) of the Chechen Republic. Police deny detention of money extorters on behalf of Kadyrov
The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has announced the detention of two Chechen natives, who, imitating his voice, tried to extort money from a businessman from Surgut into the Akhmat Kadyrov’s Fund. The video posted by Kadyrov shows the detainees’ confession. The police of the KhMAO (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, where Surgut is located) said they did not take part in the detention.

HRC "Memorial" files complaint to ECtHR concerning special operation in Dagestan
On January 18, lawyers of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" and the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre (EHRAC) applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on the fact of a special operation carried out in a Dagestani village of Vremenny (a part of the village of Gimry) in 2014. Militants killed in Grozny buried in unmarked graves
Bodies of the militants killed in the Chechen capital on December 17-18, 2016 have not been finally given out to their family members, who learned that their killed relatives were buried in unmarked graves near Grozny. Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies do not comment on the information.

In "Nardaran case", defendants describe themselves as fighters against injustice
On January 18, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes continued listening to final speeches of the defendants in the "Nardaran case". All of them pleaded not guilty and associated their prosecution with fight against injustice and lawlessness.
