The past 2010 was marked by many resonant trials, where natives of Southern Russia and the Caucasus were figurants; a full stop was put in many of them. Some of these trials were held abroad and acquired great public resonance because notable political figures were involved. Most often it concerned one of the regions of Russia - the Chechen Republic, which is still under close scrutiny of human rights defenders. Also, last year was marked by passing final decision on cases of Moscow-based groupings, which had been killing people of non-Slavic nationalities, by trials started in Northern Caucasus on murders of prominent people, as well as by further consideration in Kabardino-Balkaria case of the case dealing with attack on Nalchik in 2005.

2010 in Northern Caucasus has been marked with a loss of over one hundred peaceful residents in armed confrontations. Some of them perished because of actions of members of the top brass. The number of victims can be even more if we take into consideration statements of relatives of the people who died in special operations and skirmishes, they say that their people became accidental victims or were kidnapped.

A woman-therapist of the second district hospital of the village of Gvardeiskoe, Nadterechny District of Chechnya, was detained red-handed at taking a bribe. According to the local department of the FSB (Federal Security Bureau) the doctor extorted money from an elderly woman for issuing a direction to medical commission for establishing disability, a source from law enforcement bodies of Chechnya has reported.

The Russian Federation Council (FC) has approved the ban for heads of Russian subjects to name them presidents. According to the bill, heads of regions may choose the names of their posts with account of historical and cultural traditions. In the republics of the Caucasus, presidents now exist in Adygea, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia.
