During the week of August 11-17, 2014, the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus claimed at least one human life; no information about wounded people was reported. The casualty is a civilian Rasul Gamzatov – Deputy Mufti of North Ossetia. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

On August 17, the fifth annual North-Caucasian Youth Forum "Mashuk-2014", held in Pyatigorsk during two weeks, was closed. The closing ceremony was held at the evening of August 16.

On August 11, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" published a new updated list of persons recognized as political prisoners. At present, the list has been expanded from 40 up to 45 persons, including, in particular, Ruslan Kutaev, the President of the Assembly of Peoples of the Caucasus.

The Lefortovo Court of Moscow has extended for two months the arrest of Khasan Edilkhanov, a native of Chechnya, suspected of involvement in illegal armed formations (IAFs), the "Kommersant" reports. The defence treats the charges filed against the student as far-fetched.

Roundtable in Grozny suggests putting NCFD representatives into conflict settlement group in Ukraine
On August 8, the city of Grozny held a roundtable "Chechnya's Experience as Tool to Stop Bloodshed in Ukraine", organized by the "Objective" News Agency jointly with the "United Caucasian Forum" and with the support of the Public Chamber of Chechnya. The event was attended by rights defenders and public figures from Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia and North Ossetia.

Today is exactly 15 years after the launch of an armed aggression against Dagestan undertaken on August 7, 1999, when militants – Wahhabis – invaded Dagestan from Chechnya. Today, Dagestan is commemorating the victims of those tragic events. The MPs of the Russian State Duma have promised in the near future to address the issue of the status of Dagestani militias, who participated in the warfare in Dagestan in 1999.

In the capital of Chechnya, a special commission has begun inspecting the city dormitories, which were used earlier as temporary accommodation centres (TACs) for forced migrants and refugees. Tenants of the former TACs associate the next wave of checks with the authorities' intention to evict as many families as possible in order to escape solving their housing problems.
