Law enforcers start guarding the New Year Tree in Grozny
On the eve of the New Year holidays, law enforcers in the capital of Chechnya have switched to the round-the-clock service. Townspeople report that access to the New Year Tree, set up in central Grozny is possible only after a personal search.

Defence states unequal terms at Oyub Titiev's trial
The court has rejected the defence's petition to question the owners of the stores equipped with video cameras, which could record the route of Oyub Titiev, the head of the Grozny office of the Human Tights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", on the day of his detention. This proves that the defence and the prosecution are in unequal conditions, Pyotr Zaikin, an advocate, has stated.

Monument to Turkish soldiers in Dagestan reminds about controversial aspects of civil war
Residents of Kumyk villages near Makhachkala have erected a monument to the soldiers of the Ottoman Empire, who 100 years ago drove troops of General Lazar Bicherakhov out of Dagestan. Locals associate General's soldiers with violence and perceive their Turk counterparts as liberators; however, historians have no common opinion on whether the actions of the Ottoman Empire in Northern Caucasus were intervention.

MPs to amend the law to investigate Zviad Gamsakhurdia's murder
The amendments aimed to increase the term for investigating crimes will be adopted under the accelerated procedure; this will allow to finish the inquiry into the murder of Zviad Gamsakhurdia, the first president of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Speaker of the Parliament, has promised today. Defence appeals against Kirkitadze's arrest in Gurdjaani
