USA to allocate 0.7 million dollars on GUAM development

The US Government plans to provide about 700,000 dollars for structural development of the GUAM - the economic-political association of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. The decision of the US authorities was announced on May 30 by Ann Dersy, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan.

According to Ms Dersy, the funds will go to strengthening the technical base of the organization and development of information-communication technologies. It is planned to set up a GUAM digital video system that will link GUAM representative offices created in all member-countries and allow holding interactive conferences. Besides, it is planned to creation a GUAM's Internet resource.

In his turn, Valery Chechelashvili, Secretary General of the organization, has informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the GUAM structuring process is already over. According to his version, the GUAM member-countries hope that the organization will contribute to promote their foreign policy interests.

Mr Chechelashvili has noted that a number of major project have already been implemented under the GUAM, and has informed on the forthcoming plans of the organization. "We try to launch a free economic zone within the borders of the GUAM," he has added.

  • Rights defenders give number of kidnapped people in Chechnya

    At least 80 residents of Chechnya have been kidnapped after a car with a DUSTUM license plate was set on fire; volunteers have identified the names of a number of them. In the village of Starye Atagi, Urus-Martan District, about 50 members of the Saif-Islam Elmurzaev family, suspected of setting the above car on fire, have been kidnapped; and about 30 people have been kidnapped in the Shali District, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)* has reported.
