Forum in memory of Politkovskaya held in Washington

The International Conference "Russia - a Year after Anna Politkovskaya's Murder" is currently underway in Washington.

Journalists, human rights activists and representatives of the Russian opposition are among the participants of the forum. The action was organized by the Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty with participation of the US Congress.

While recollecting the life, achievements and death of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, the participants of the forum are also discussing the problems of restricting the freedom of speech in Russia, facts of violations of human rights and attempts to suppress dissidence in all its manifestations, the Radio Liberty informs.

We remind you that October 7 was one year after the murder in Moscow of well-known journalist Anna Politkovskaya, an observer of "Novaya Gazeta." In connection with this date, all over Europe and in the cities of Russia memorial actions and various cultural actions are held.

  • Rights defenders give number of kidnapped people in Chechnya

    At least 80 residents of Chechnya have been kidnapped after a car with a DUSTUM license plate was set on fire; volunteers have identified the names of a number of them. In the village of Starye Atagi, Urus-Martan District, about 50 members of the Saif-Islam Elmurzaev family, suspected of setting the above car on fire, have been kidnapped; and about 30 people have been kidnapped in the Shali District, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)* has reported.
