Officials in Novolaksky District of Dagestan suspected of land frauds for resettlers

In the Novolaksky District, under forged documents, officials have transferred 40 land plots, intended for the resettlement of Lak nationals from the former Aukhov District, to strangers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this September it became known that a court in Makhachkala had sentenced in absentia Karamudin Garunov, an entrepreneur, to freedom deprivation. Being the head of the construction company, he was found guilty of a multimillion fraud in the construction of 202 houses for Lak settlers from the former Aukhov District.

Officials of the Novolaksky District administration are suspected of large-scale frauds in the registration of land plots under the resettlement programme, the Dagestani branch of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has reported in its Telegram channel.

According to investigators, the guilty officials had produced false documents required to obtain land plots for 40 residents of the republic, although they knew that they had not been included into the category of citizens recognized as resettlers.

Let us remind you that the restoration of the Aukhov District, which was planned to be completed by 2025, has actually been stopped, local activists said earlier this February.

The Aukhov District, which was inhabited by Akkin Chechens, was liquidated in 1944 after Stalin's deportation of Chechens and Ingushes. On part of this territory, the Novolaksky District was formed and populated by Laks; and a part thereof was transferred to the Kazbekovsky District and populated by Avars. In 1957, the Akkin Chechens, like the rest of the deported Vainakh nationals, were allowed to return to their historical homeland.

The Vainakhs' deportation has to do with the unresolved issue of the rights of the Dagestani Chechens, who have been waiting for the restoration of the Aukhov District for almost 30 years.
