Grozny resident Batykaev sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment for attacking Pskov paratroopers

A court sentenced Alavdi Batykaev, a resident of Grozny, to a term of imprisonment in a penal colony, recognizing him as a participant in an attack on Pskov paratroopers in 2000. The court’s verdict was pronounced despite the contradictions in the testimonies of witnesses and the Alavdi Batykaev’s statement that he was not guilty.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in July 2022, Alavdi Batykaev was arrested on the charge of participating in the attack on Pskov paratroopers. The man claimed that he was not guilty.

On the night of March 1, 2000, in Chechnya, fighters of the sixth troop of the 104th regiment of the 76th Guards Airborne Division entered into a battle with a large detachment of militants led by Shamil Basaev and Amir Khattab. The troop held off the attack of about 2000 militants for 24 hours. As a result, 84 of the 90 fighters perished, and 370 militants were killed.

The court found Alavdi Batykaev guilty under the article on the attempt on the lives of military personnel. According to the investigators’ version, Alavdi Batykaev participated in the attack on the Pskov paratroopers and “aimed and shot at the military personnel with a Kalashnikov assault rifle.”

Let us remind you that none of the victims was able to identify Alavdi Batykaev, and their stories about the course of the battle fundamentally contradicted the testimonies of secret witnesses, which formed the basis of the criminal case, as an advocate of Alavdi Batykaev and human rights defender Oyub Titiev claimed in November 2023.

The secret prosecution witnesses in the Alavdi Batykaev’s case gave contradictory testimonies that were not credible, and there was no objective evidence of the Alavdi Batykaev’s guilt in the criminal case, human rights defenders claimed in August 2023.
