Residents of Chechnya complain about problems due to power outages

Regular power outages and voltage surges lead to failures of household appliances and additional expenses, residents of Chechnya have complained. The electricity supplier is responsible for the caused damages, an advocate has pointed out.

In August 2023, because of hot weather, energy professionals recommended residents of Chechnya to use electricity sparingly. In their turn, social media users assert that the "Chechenenergo" Company should provide the necessary power volume instead of cutting off electricity and calling for sparing use thereof.

Markha Alieva, a villager from the Shali District, said that within a month local residents were without electricity supply for about 20 hours and at the same time paid extra money for the lost supply.

Rasul, a resident of the Staropromyslovsky District, reported that after power surges, his computer and television broke down. "Such voltage surges can lead to short circuits and even fires," he has added.

Bella from the village of Samashki, the mother of two schoolchildren, has reported that her washing machine burned out after a power surge. "I have to wash by hand and dry clothes over a stove or a hairdryer – there's no other way; my kids should go to classes in their uniforms," she has complained.

After this, Bella and her husband came to a difficult decision – to take out a loan, although they had already taken out one loan to finish building a house.

Nikolai Dyakov, an advocate, is sure that the power supplier or other responsible organization must compensate for the caused damages. If the service provider refuses to compensate for the losses, then people need to go to court, he has noted, adding that "as a rule, especially in the Caucasus, service providers refuse to compensate for damages."

  • Rights defenders treat case of missing Movsar Umarov as typical for Chechnya

The decision of the Grozny court to provide Eset Umarova with the materials of the case of her son Movsar's disappearance gives some hope to his family, but investigators are unlikely to make the hope true. The fate of Chechen residents who disappeared like Umarov often remains unknown, human rights defenders have pointed out.
