Chairman of Ingush Council of Teips steps down

Murad Daskiev, who headed the Council of Teips (family clans) of Ingushetia after the arrest of Malsag Uzhakhov, has announced his resignation. In his post, Daskiev withstood enormous pressure from authorities and law enforcement bodies, Magomed Mutsolgov, a human rights defender, has pointed out.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in July 2019, Murad Daskiev, the then acting head of the Ingush Council of Teips, was fined for spreading "fake news". The court treated as such an appeal posted on the Council's website and addressed to the Ingush MPs, in which the problem of the territorial belonging of the Prigorodny District of North Ossetia was raised. On June 2, 2020, Daskiev was fined again – this time for appealing, on behalf of the Ingush Council of Teips, to the President of Russia with a protest against amendments to the Russian Constitution.

On March 27, 2020, the Supreme Court (SC) of Ingushetia ruled to liquidate the Ingush Council of Teips for interfering in authorities' activities and disclosing state secrets. The decision to liquidate is a political one, Murad Daskiev, the acting chairman of the Council, has stated.

Malsag Uzhakhov, the previous Chairman of the Council, was arrested in April 2019 within a criminal case on the use of violence against policemen during a rally in Magas. On December 15, 2021, he was sentenced to 9 years of freedom deprivation under "extremist" articles.

Daskiev was the chairman of the Council at a difficult time, Magomed Mutsolgov, a rights defender, has noted. "Suffice it to say that the former chairman, Malsag Uzhakhov, along with other activists, was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment. During the time that Daskiev headed the Council, he personally withstood enormous pressure ... But the Council of Teips of Ingushetia, in spite of everything, will continue working," Mr Mutsolgov is sure.
