Chechen SC denies compensation to resident of Chechnya for torture by law enforcers

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has refused to satisfy the claim lodged by Mekhidi Timirbulatov, a local resident, who demanded 1.5 million roubles in compensation for torture by law enforcers in 2001.

The SC has denied compensation claimed by Timirbulatov for the torture he suffered during the second Chechen campaign. He claimed 1.5 million roubles as compensation for moral harm, mental and physical rehabilitation, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project has informed.

In his lawsuit, Timirbulatov stated that in August 2001, he was detained by law enforcers in the city of Gudermes during a cleansing operation in the village of Belorechye and taken to the police station, where he was tortured. The complaint about torture is still "pending the investigating authorities of the Chechen Republic, who ignore all the appeals." "By the torture, the claimant was subjected to considerable moral harm, and severe physical and mental sufferings," the lawsuit states.
