Court decides to stop operation of “Novaya Gazeta” website as a media outlet

The Supreme Court of Russia considered a claim filed by the “Roskomnadzor” (the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media) and decided to stop the validity of the certificate of registration issued for the electronic media outlet of the “Novaya Gazeta” website.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on March 28, the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” announced that the publication of its printed version was suspended until the end of the special military operation in Ukraine. The newspaper was issued a warning in connection with the violation of the law on foreign agents. Later, in Moscow, a court granted the claim filed by the “Roskomnadzor” demanding to annul the registration of the “Novaya Gazeta”.

The Supreme Court (SC) of Russia also granted the claim to terminate the activities of the “Novaya Gazeta” website as an electronic media outlet, the TASS reports. The editors of the “Novaya Gazeta” said they would appeal against the court’s decision.

Let us remind you that since 2017, the “Novaya Gazeta” has been investigating mass arrests without trials, torture, executions, and conviction of more than 100 people in Chechnya. Elena Milashina, a journalist for the “Novaya Gazeta”, has repeatedly published investigations into human rights violations in Chechnya and received threats from supporters of the republic’s authorities.

In October 2021, Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “defending freedom of expression.”
