Defence treats guilt of figurants in Kamalov's murder case as unproved

The prosecution has failed to prove that Shamil Isaev, accused of killing Khadjimurad Kamalov, the founder of the "Chernovik" (Draft) outlet, had a motive to commit the crime, the defendant's advocate has stated at trial. The state prosecutor has ignored all the defence's proofs, including the alibis of three defendants, the advocates have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 22, it became known that at debates, the prosecutor asked to sentence the three figurants in Kamalov's murder case, namely, Shamil Isaev, Murad Shuaibov and Magomed Khazamov, to life imprisonment. The prosecutor asked to sentence the fourth defendant, Magomed Abigasanov, who made a deal with investigators, to 15 years in prison.

Khadjimurad Kamalov, the Director General of the "Freedom of Speech" Company and the founder of the "Chernovik", was shot dead on December 15, 2011, not far from the portal's office in Makhachkala. Shamil Isaev, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Dagestan, was named the customer of Kamalov's murder. Apart from Isaev, there are three more natives of Dagestan in the dock – Murad Shuaibov, Magomed Khazamov and Magomed Abigasanov.

At the trial, Shamil Isaev claimed that he had nothing to do with the crime and noted that he had no conflicts with Khadjimurad Kamalov. Abigasanov "was forced to give the evidence that investigators needed," Isaev has stated.

The verdict should be an acquittal, since the prosecution failed to present a motive for committing the crime, Anna Byurchieva, Isaev's advocate, believes.

Magdi Kamalov, a brother of Khadjimurad Kamalov, recognized as a victim in the case, has also disagreed with the state prosecutor. The court failed to establish the motive that prompted Isaev to order Khadjimurad Kamalov's murder, Magdi believes.

During the debates, the state prosecution has ignored the defence's evidence that was presented during a year, Asad Djabirov, the advocate for Murad Shuaibov, has stated, noting that all the three defendants, who refused to plead guilty at trial, have a "100% alibi," and the charge itself is built on contradictions, he has added.
