Georgian military leave for Iraq to join peacekeeping operation
A group of about 70 Georgian military have left for Iraq to join the U.S. and Britain-led peacekeeping operation there.
It includes 34 fighters of special assignment forces, 20 army medics, and 15 engineers.
Georgian parliament passed a resolution July 16 to dispatch a military unit to Iraq "for restoring peace and stability". The Pentagon and Georgian officials had been holding talks on the presence of Georgian troops in Iraq since April.
Tedo Djaparidze, secretary of Georgia's Security Council, told reporters Sunday the government was considering a dispatch of law enforcers, including policemen to Iraq at a later date.
