Chechen officials write deportation posts amid February 23 celebrations

Ramzan Kadyrov and his associates did not ignore the 78th anniversary of the deportation of the Vainakh people, but devoted to it only posts on social media. Street actions in Chechnya were dedicated to the Defender of the Fatherland Day and the recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in 2020, on the Defender of the Fatherland Day, a rally in memory of the victims of repression was held in Grozny, in which Ramzan Kadyrov took part.

“The day of February 23 is one of the most tragic dates in the history of the Chechen and Ingush peoples. In 1944, on the orders of Joseph Stalin, cursed by all peoples, our peoples fell victim to the flagrant and inhuman crime: mass deportation to Siberia and Kazakhstan,” he wrote on a page on VKontakte.

Magomed Daudov, the speaker of the Chechen Parliament, posted a similar post on Instagram.

Muslim Khuchiev, the chair of the government of Chechnya, called the deportation of the Vainakh people a terrible crime.

On February 23, 1944, the operation “Lentil” was started, during which almost 500,000 Chechen and Ingush people were deported from the territory of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to Kazakhstan and Central Asia. According to various estimates, 10,000 people died on the way, and during the first years after the eviction, 100,000 people died.

According to the news agency “Chechnya Today”, a flash mob has also been held today, organized by activists of youth public associations of Chechnya in honour of the President Vladimir Putin’s decision to recognize the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.
