New campaign to change toponyms launched in Chechnya

It is suggested to rename five Grozny dwelling settlements in honour of heroes of the Chechen nation, or to return their old names, Magomed Daudov, the Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, announced on November 11.

In particular, it is proposed to rename the Kalinin settlement into Maas one; the Katayama settlement into the one named after Dashi Akaev; the town of Mayakovsky into the settlement named after Abuzar Aidamirov; the settlement of Voikovo into the one named after Shoip-Mulla; and the Kirov settlement into the one named after Dagun Omaev, the "Chechnya Today" has reported.

In the above five settlements, polling of residents is underway; the working groups with questionnaires are visiting household after household, says the message posted on November 10 on the website of the Grozny City Duma.

Dasha Akaev, after whom renaming of Katayama settlement is suggested, is a Chechen pilot and a hero of the Great Patriotic War. Abuzar Aidamirov, whose name is planned to award to the settlement of Mayakovsky, is the Chechen-Ingush people's writer. Shoip-Mulla (Shuaib-Mulla) of Tsontoroi was a Chechen commander during the Caucasian War of 1817-1864. For the successful defeat of tsarist troops under the command of General Grabbe in Chechen forests in the summer of 1842, he was named "Forest War Marshal". Dagun Omaev is a well-known Chechen theatre and cinema actor.
