Former ambassador of Azerbaijan Eldar Gasanov feels worse in hospital

The defence of Eldar Gasanov again requested the General Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan to change the pre-trial restriction measure for his treatment at a clinic because of the deterioration of his condition at a hospital.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on August 2, Eldar Gasanov was placed to the hospital of the State Security Service after he felt bad at a SIZO (pre-trial prison). The defence filed a motion to release the defendant because of the deterioration of his health state, advocate Djavad Djavadov reported. The term of Eldar Gasanov’s arrest was extended until September 10.

After his arrest, Eldar Gasanov fell ill with a chronic disease that causes dizziness, and since October 2020, he fell about 170 times, the advocate reported.

“On August 8, as a result of another dizziness and loss of consciousness, Eldar Gasanov fell facedown in a military hospital. By a lucky coincidence, my client escaped a head injury and got only harmless injuries,” Djavad Djavadov said.

“We have repeatedly appealed to the authorities of the country, the General Prosecutor’s Office, but with no results. There is no reaction to our appeals,” the advocate reports. He emphasizes that Eldar Gasanov needs effective medical treatment, which cannot be provided in prison conditions.

The Criminal Code of Azerbaijan provides for not only a change in the pre-trial restriction measure, but also early release after a court verdict, reports Rasul Djafarov, the head of the Baku Human Rights Club. “If the detention in prison threatens the health state and life of a prisoner, then the law allows him to be released early,” said the human rights defender.

Let us remind you that Eldar Gasanov was accused of abuse of office and embezzlement of budget funds. Human rights defenders associate the prosecution of the former ambassador with his political ambitions.
