Advocates state grave condition of Eldar Gasanov, former Azerbaijani GPO head

The defence of Eldar Gasanov, the former Public General Prosecutor of Azerbaijan, has appealed to authorities in connection with his grave health condition. They ask for help in changing his freedom restraint measure so that Gasanov could receive high quality medical care.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Eldar Gasanov, who was the Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, was under arrest since August 2020 under the case of employees of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) suspected of abuse and corruption. Rights defenders associate Gasanov's persecution with his political ambitions. He is under threat of up to seven years in prison.

All the four Gasanov's advocates have appealed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev and First Vice President Mekhriban Alieva. Their message posted on the Facebook page of Djavad Djavadov, an advocate, notes that they are appealing for the "last time", because Gasanov's health condition is so grave that "there may not be another time."

The advocates have recalled that already in their previous appeals, in particular, in October 2020, they emphasized Gasanov's health problems.

"Since then, Eldar Gasanov fainted for more than 170 times ... Such serious complications were caused by the repeated refusals of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) to admit doctors of his choice to our client," Mr Djavadov has stated.
