Kremlin distances itself from situation with Khalimat Taramova

The Kremlin is aware of reports about Khalimat Taramova, who fled domestic violence, but does not attribute such cases to its competence, says Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary for the Russian President.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on June 10, Dagestani law enforcers and their colleagues from Chechnya came to a Makhachkala apartment shelter for victims of domestic violence. The law enforcers detained people living in the shelter, including Khalimat Taramova. Later, the young woman was handed over to her relatives. On June 14, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) requested information from Russia concerning Khalimat Taramova’s case.

Dmitry Peskov has emphasized that in Russia, domestic violence is punishable by law, like any other kind of violence, the TASS reports.

Khalimat Taramova is a daughter of a close associate of Ramzan Kadyrov. The young woman had to flee Chechnya to save herself from domestic violence to which she was subjected because of her sexual orientation, the “Russian LGBT Network”* reports. The human rights defenders fear that the young woman will face a mortal danger in Chechnya. Khalimat Taramova’s friend Anna Manylova said that when the father took Khalimat Taramova out of the shelter, she threatened to commit suicide.

Earlier, the “Grozny” TV Channel has posted on Instagram a report on Khalimat Taramova. The young woman said in front of a video camera that she was glad to be at home and assured that she was “absolutely not pressured.” Social media users doubted Khalimat Taramova’s statement about the observance of her rights in Chechnya.
