Azerbaijani oppositionist Gurban Mamedov detained in Turkey

In Turkey, law enforcers detained Gurban Mamedov. The authorities of Azerbaijani put the man on the international wanted list under the charge of calling for riots and overthrowing the government, reports Goshgar Mamedov, a son of the oppositionist.

Gurban Mamedov is a lawyer and an Azerbaijani opposition politician. After the Popular Front of Azerbaijan (PFA) was established in the summer of 1989, the Sabirabad regional branch of the PFA was created, and Gurban Mamedov was elected its chairman. After his arrests in 1998 and 2013, local human rights organizations recognized Gurban Mamedov as a political prisoner, and the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) – as a "prisoner of conscience."

The law enforcement bodies of Turkey detained Azerbaijani oppositionist Gurban Mamedov after he had been put on the international wanted list by the Azerbaijani authorities, the "JAM News" reports today.

Gurban Mamedov lived in London for some time, and his detention was reported by his son Goshgar Mamedov, the "Zerkalo.az" reports today. The General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan accused Gurban Mamedov of calling for riots and violent seizure of power, the "Zerkalo.az" reports.
