Tbilisi protesters demand resignation of MIA head and government

The murders of young people in Georgia are investigated inefficiently, protesters in Tbilisi have stated. They demanded resignation of the head of the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and the government.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 23, several dozen people held protest actions in Tbilisi and Batumi, demanding an efficient inquiry into the recent murders of a football player and a young woman.

In the evening on July 23, activists, including Zviad Kuprava, the head of the Centre for Law Enforcement Reforms, fathers of the young people who perished during law enforcers' operations, held a protest action in front of the country's MIA, the "Sputnik-Georgia" has reported. The protesters expressed their solidarity to the families of Tamar Bachaliashvili and Giorgi Shakarashvili; they also demanded an efficient inquiry into the deaths of young people and demanded the resignation of Vakhtang Gomelauri, the head of Georgian MIA.

"The head of the MIA, under whom ... so many murders were committed, has no moral and political right to stay in the post and continue heading the MIA. He must resign immediately," the "InterPressNews" quotes Zviad Kuprava as saying.
