Father of Akhmedov, arrested PFPA activist, complains about ban on visits

A court in Baku has upheld the arrest of Niyameddin Akhmedov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), within the case of financing terrorism. Akhmedov declared his innocence; and his father has stated that he is not allowed to visit and call his son, contained in jail.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 15, 2020, Akhmedov was detained and arrested for 30 days for violating the quarantine and disobeying policemen's demands. His party colleagues state that law enforcers had tortured Akhmedov in order to force him to testify against Ali Kerimli, the PFPA leader. On May 15, Akhmedov was charged with financing terrorism.

"Niyameddin has denied the charge of receiving money from his German-based fellow villager Gabil Mamedov for terrorist activities and committing a putsch," said Zafar Akhmedov, a member of the Committee against Torture and Repressions.

Arif Akhmedov, Niyameddin's father, believes that his son is being prosecuted on trumped-up charges. According to his story, his son's arrest has to do with his political activities in the PFPA.
