PFPA activist accused of hooliganism

Said Mamedzade has been arrested on charges of hooliganism. The accusation is fabricated; Mamedzade is persecuted for political reasons, the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) has stated.

Mamedzade (political pseudonym Bakuvi), a PFPA activist, has been arrested in Baku on criminal charges of hooliganism.

Gezyal Bairamly, Deputy Chair of the PFPA, is convinced that the criminal case is fabricated. In her opinion, Mamedzade is persecuted because of his political activities.

"As an athlete, he volunteered to guard the PFPA leader, Ali Kerimli, at public events to avoid provocations against the party leader. Said became the second volunteer bodyguard of Kerimli arrested on criminal charges in recent days. Last week on an even more absurd charge – of financing of terrorism – another Kerimli's bodyguard, Niyameddin Akhmedov, was arrested. This is a new wave of repression against the PFPA," Ms Bairamly asserts.

Ayaz Magerramli, a member of the PFPA Presidium, has suggested that Mamedzade was involved in an incident he had witnessed.

"The party affiliation of Mamedzade doesn't matter. According to investigators, he had stabbed a citizen," the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Azerbaijan has informed.
