Change of investigator in case on torture of Kuban resident encourages rights defenders

The Prosecutor's Office cancelled the decision to close a case on torture by law enforcers of Yevgeny Bunin, a resident of the Tuapse District, and entrusted the case to another investigator, reported the Committee Against Torture (CaT). The human rights defenders express the hope that the new investigation will be effective.

According to the human rights defenders, investigator twice stopped the investigation into the case. For the last time, the investigation was stopped on October 27, when the investigator came to the conclusion that Yevgeny Bunin was not beaten after his detention.

Today, lawyers of the Committee against Torture have got a notification that the preliminary investigation into the case on torture of Yevgeny Bunin was extended until December 29, and the investigation was entrusted to a new investigator, reports the CaT's press release sent to the "Caucasian Knot" today.

"We are satisfied that the investigation has been resumed, and a new investigator will be in charge of the case. We will also seek disciplinary punishment for Investigator [...] and compensation for non-pecuniary damage for Yevgeny Bunin for the ineffective investigation into his complaints of torture," the press release quotes Roman Veretennikov, a lawyer of the Committee against Torture, as saying.
