South Ossetia closes border with Georgia before Five-Day War anniversary

The border with Georgia is closed until the morning of August 9 in connection with the commemorative events, the South-Ossetian State Security Committee announced on the Facebook.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that South Ossetia operates four checkpoints of simplified crossing the border with Georgia, and South Ossetia regularly closes the border on various occasions. Thus, on June 8-11, the checkpoints were closed on the occasion of elections in South Ossetia.

In 2008, military actions in South Ossetia began at night on August 8 with shelling of Tskhinvali by Georgian artillery and retaliatory actions of Russian armed forces. The warfare lasted for five days. After that, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia. Georgia treats it as its occupied territory.
