Georgian activists achieve legalization of marijuana

The Constitutional Court (CC) of Georgia has granted the claim of activists of the "Girchi" Party, having recognized the administrative punishment for the use of marijuana to be unconstitutional.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since the start of 2018, activists in Georgia were holding actions demanding a softening of the country's drug policy. Legalization of marijuana in Georgia was sought by activists of the "Girchi" (Strobilus) Party, while the movement "White Noise" demands the decriminalization of drugs in general.

The Georgia's CC has granted the lawsuit lodged by Zurab Djaparidze and Vakhtang Megrelishvili, "Girchi" activists, having found all the sanctions for the use of marijuana without a doctor's appointment to be unconstitutional. The First Collegium of the CC has announced this decision today, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Thus, the CC has legalized the use of marijuana in Georgia.

According to the decision posted on the CC's website, "the use of marijuana is an action protected by the right to free development of a human," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The decision stipulates that the spread of light drugs remains prohibited. Besides, the CC has upheld the responsibility for the consumption of marijuana in public places and transport means, at educational establishments, and in the presence of minors.
